I was presented with a wonderful opportunity to work with 25 young reporters from 25 of the participating countries and territories participating in the Games. I am one of the mentors for the Young Reporters Program. They are 20-25 year olds who are or have studied journalism and or sports management. Many have had experience reporting on sporting events and in some cases are international athletes. As I read their bios, I am so impressed by what they have already accomplished in their young lives. It is very inspiring and refreshing. They will be attending lectures and discussions with renowned people involved in international multi-sport events. They will be their mentors during the games. These young people will also meet athletes from their countries and get a chance to interview them. They will get to see the inner-workings of the media. They will come away with a skill-set that will be valuable in their future endeavors. What a fantastic opportunity for them to network and learn from the experts in their fields. I am so fortunate to be involved in this wonderful experience. It is great to see that they are all making new friendships and connections.
From the moment that I got to Pitman Hall, I hit the ground running. I have been welcoming the reporters, checking them in, giving them their backpack of goodies, a t-shirt, and a binder full of information they need. I have really used this time to get to know my fellow mentors, Melissa and Juan. I can't wait to share my experiences with my students. These two are amazing. They know so many people in the international sporting world. They have set goals and are achieving them. They have a lot to teach these young reporters and myself. It is so heart-warming to hear about what they have done in their young lives. They are terrific role models!
Sydney and Alex being greeted by Juan and Melissa.
Juan and I are still waiting to greet and welcome 3 more reporters. It is almost 1:30am Eastern time.
This has been a long day. Luckily I'm still on Pacific time. I'm going to feel it when I have to get up for breakfast at 7:30am. We have a full day of activities.
