Canadians Have Been So Kind

This is Grace and her traveling stuffed animal, Squirtle. It's been wonderful working with her and riding home on the bus home together. She knows so much about the Olympics Games. I love her energy and enthusiasm. She wants to become a sports writer. I know she can do it.

I have met and talked with many Canadians. They are so helpful, welcoming, and friendly. I strike-up conversations with the people I sit next to on the bus. The buses are for volunteers as well as spectators. About half of them live here in Whistler, and the other half are from other other parts of Canada. About 10,000 people live in Whistler. Many of those currently living here are transplants because they came for holiday and fell in love with the town, it's people, and of course the mountains. It seems as though most of them ski and love outdoor sports. During the summer people for all over the world visit to hike and mountain bike.

When I tell them I'm from San Jose, CA, they are all surprised and ask what I'm doing volunteering here. My standard response is, "I'm here to help my neighbors to the North." It shocks them to know that I have paid my own way here and that I also pay for housing. One lady said that she would have hosted me for free if she know I needed housing. They are thankful for all volunteers. There are many international volunteers.

I am impressed that they have a great love for their country and of winter sports. Since I work at the media center, on a couple of instances I have informed them that Canada won another medal. They are so happy and proud.

Hopefully I have made a good impression on them. Like any other people, they have preconceived notions about Americans. I'd like to think that I am a good ambassador for the USA. I love making connections with people of all cultures.

Oh, I'm sure after they meet you from America, they will have a totally different opinion of all of us! Way to go, girl! Arlene, you might try becoming an ambassador of the US to another country. I'm serious. You would do so much good.
